“Lucas” by Kevin Brooks

07 Jul

FROM A KINNELON LIBRARY TEEN REVIEWER:

"Lucas" was an amazing book. It was slow at times, but was definitely a book I could not put down. The characters came to life and it felt like you were right alongside them throughout the novel. This book was serious and dramatic, and it was definitely one of my favorites. It feels as if the book is about to end at various points, but then Brooks creates another engaging scenario that brings Lucas to life. Overall, a must read!

      Recommendations …

Kevin Brooks’ new book, “Book of the Dead,” is out now. This one is about a girl (Rachel) who is raped and murdered early in the story. Her psychic brother, Ruben, can “see” their other brother, Cole, trying to get revenge for these crimes.

Have you read Chris Lynch’s “Inexcusable”? That one is about a teen boy who refuses to believe that his night spent with his best girl friend could possibly have involved rape. As the story progresses, you see more and more that the main character is almost a monster.

I haven’t read it myself, but “What Happened to Lani Garver” by Carol Plum-Ucci has a somewhat similar plotline. This story takes place on Hackett Island and involves Claire’s relationship with Lani, a mysterious new student — a true outcast — who might be an angel.

Last one that I can think of to recommend is Alice Sebold’s “The Lovely Bones.” It’s a novel written for adults, but it has great appeal for teens. The teen narrator is raped and murdered very early in the story, and then relates the aftermath of her death and its effects on her family and friends. The magical atmosphere and lyrical writing might be similar enough to interest you. It’s a beautiful and haunting story. Good luck!
