“Peaches” by Jodi Lynn Anderson

20 Oct

TEEN LIBRARIAN'S REVIEW:

Let's get a few things out of the way first: (1) This is strictly a female-oriented novel, for girls in about 7th grade and up; and (2) you'll find nothing in this plot or these characters that you haven't encountered somewhere before. With that said, this is a fast, easily readable, highly enjoyable coming-of-age novel with some genuinely sweet and touching moments.

Bad girl Murphy gets sentenced to perform community service at the Darlington's Georgia peach orchard, where she meets shy, stuck-in-a-rut Birdie, the owner's daughter, and beautiful, princess-y Leeda, Birdie's richer, more popular cousin. Murphy, Birdie, and Leeda form a tentative friendship over spring break, but it's really over the course of a long, busy summer at the orchard — one which includes plenty of late-night sneak outs to a nearby lake and even a roadside bar — that the girls become true friends.

Of course, none of the girls are truly as they first appear. Murphy, besides being a wrong-side-of-the-tracks troublemaker, is also brilliant, tough, and loads of fun. Birdie, underneath all her awkwardness, is a warm, caring person who almost single-handedly keeps the orchard running after her mom splits and her dad becomes overwhelmed by his depression. And Leeda, despite appearing absolutely perfect on the outside, is constantly comparing herself to her older sister … and constantly falling short.

What separates this book from others like it are its beautiful, almost lyrical descriptions of the sights, sounds, and smells of the peach orchard and the very real, very natural way the girls act. For example, when Birdie freezes up as a boy she likes tries to kiss her, you can understand just how nervous she is. Since the characters are so believable and, frankly, so likable, there's a huge, heartfelt payoff at the end of the story, as each girl accomplishes something important in her life.

Note: If you like "Peaches," you may also like the novels of Sarah Dessen, who writes in a similar style. Keep an eye out for the sequel, "Secrets of Peaches," due out in December.

    Loved it

I really liked this book. All three characters are easy to relate too and are fun to read about. The sequel, the Secrets of Peaches, is just as good as this one.

Don’t give up hope … you never know! Author Jodi Lynn Anderson also writes the “May Bird” series for younger readers. Maybe when she takes a break from those, she’ll revisit the Peaches? If I hear any news, I’ll be sure to post it here. Thanks for your comment!

I love this book! I’m only half-way through, but it’s been great so far. I like that the characters are so easy to relate to and every-day. I could quickly tell which one of the girls i was most like! 🙂

Awesome! Yup, sometimes you can tell pretty quickly that a book is just going to grab you and pull you in. It’s great that you can identify with at least one of the girls in “Peaches.” They each have really great qualities — and, okay, some weaknesses — so as you go along, you might see a little of yourself in the other girls, too. Thanks for sharing your comment!

    Hated it

I did not like the fact that it was slow in terms of the novel itself. It was very boring to read and rather inappropiate

      Re: Hated it

I’m sorry “Peaches” wasn’t really for you. I wonder if you found it “inappropriate” because perhaps the book was a little too old for you? It’s definitely a high-school age novel, as there are some adult themes explored in the book.

Have you ever tried the Louise Rennison or Sue Limb books? Those might be better suited for middle school readers. Here are links to the MAIN catalog for the novels of Rennison and Limb.

Thanks for taking the time to voice your opinion!

I’m so glad you loved “Peaches”! I hope you got a chance to read the next book, “Secrets of Peaches,” as well. As for Murphy’s last name, luckily it was right there on the first page. Phew! She’s Murphy McGowen. Thanks so much for writing. Happy reading!

    i think:

i think that this book shows three different personalities that are found in all girls at a certain age.most girls at the age of 13+ are a combination of the characters in this story…i really loved the book and cant wait to read the next novel.

      Re: good ?

It’s funny how our readers can have such different opinions of the same book. It’s pretty cool, though, too, right? In the end, we all look at things in our own way. Hopefully, you’ll browse through this blog and find another book that might be more to your liking. Good luck and happy reading!

      Re: ITS GREAT

Excellent review! I think that’s a perfect description, that this book is a mix (or, I guess, a squish!) of drama, reality, and romance. Thanks for sharing your opinion.

    I thought it was interesting

I thought the book was really interesting. It was well done… The book included three different girls and three completely different problems. I thought it was amazing because i could relate to all of the characters. I made one of my friends read it and she said she thougth it was ok because it was kinda like sister hood of the traveling pants… maybe there are some similarities. but all in all it still a really good book. My cousin started reading it for school and she told me about it. SO i gave it a try… I spent all day in barnes and nobles reading this book i could put it down i read it two times that day and read it two more times… Jodi Lynn Anderson really knows how to write to different age groups……. Re: I thought it was interesting

Yes, I’ve heard the comparison to the “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” series from other teen readers (different types of girls becoming close friends).

I loved your comment about reading it at B&N! Feel free to stop by a library any time to pick up a copy. We’ll even let you have it for free. 😛

    Amazing Book

Reading the back of the book, I thought, peaches? And orchard? How can someone write a whole book on that. And make it interesting! But when I started to read it, I was instantly drawn in. I absolutely LOVED the book. I was amazing by how the author developed the characters, and was constantly moving along the plot with ease. I would recommend this book to any teen ^-^ 5/5 =P

      Re: sixth grade

Ouch, that’s a little harsh. I’m not sure it’s fair to criticize people simply because they adore a book that you dislike. Do you know what I mean? It’s one thing to criticize the book itself, which is perfectly acceptable. People like different things, and, for whatever reason, this book isn’t working for you. But to extend that out to a broad negative comment about the audience itself seems both unnecessary and, well, wrong. Just something to think about.

Anyway, good luck with your book report, and thanks for the comment.

    Peaches

I read the book and your review of the book. The book was, yes amazing, but much more detail should have been brought into the seranio of all the progession between the girls relationships and where they stand as any standard, every day person. I thought that the way J.L.A wrote the story seemed very real, and I think she may have had such experiences in her younger adult life.
