“Schooled” by Gordon Korman

27 Aug

TEEN LIBRARIAN'S REVIEW:

"Schooled" is the story of Capricorn ("Cap") Anderson, a young teen who was raised in virtual isolation on the Garland Farm commune with only his grandmother, Rain. When Rain falls from a tree while picking plums, Cap's entire existence is radically changed. Because Rain will need at least two months of rehabilitation for her broken hip, Cap — for the first time in his life — must leave the commune, move to a house in town, interact with other teenagers, and attend a regular middle school. Mind you, Cap has never seen a television, computer, cell phone, or ipod. He has no idea how people use money, checks, and property. In fact, he can't even understand why someone would need a school locker!

Cap is placed at the suburban home of social worker Flora Donnelly and her beautiful, somewhat bratty high school age daughter, Sophie. Many years before, Flora's parents had been members of the commune, so Flora knows full well just how jarring it is to be thrown into modern life all at once. As for Sophie, she either ignores the "freakazoid" or, in her more evil moments, dumps water on him while he practices tai chi on the front lawn.

Unfortunately, Sophie's "freakazoid" label, while harsh, is also fairly accurate. To his new classmates at Claverage (nicknamed "C Average") Middle School, Cap might as well have landed from a different planet. With his tie-dyed shirts, hemp sandals, and long hippie hair, Cap is literally stuck in the 1960s. Even beyond his appearance, Cap's behavior — his desire to learn all 1100 students' names, his complete failure to get ruffled by bullies or teen pranks — is completely foreign. Unlike his peers, Cap literally sees only good in people, regardless of the situation.

Cap's classmates, including football jock Zach and popular girls Naomi and Lena, immediately size him up as an easy target. They conspire, successfully, to get Cap elected 8th grade class president, thinking the results of putting someone so clueless in charge will be hilarious. But what begins as a cruel joke eventually becomes a life-changing experience for both Cap and his peers. Slowly but surely, he wins them over with his simple innocence, generous spirit, and refusal to compromise himself.

This book's theme — an outsider teaching conformist teens the true meaning of individuality — reminded me of Jerry Spinelli's "Stargirl." But this book is so much more gentle and lighthearted in its tone. While author Gordon Korman is clearly trying to impart a lesson, he does so in a thoroughly entertaining, enjoyable manner. I also liked the use of rotating narrators, which allows the reader to understand Cap's story from his perspective as well as those of his classmates, Flora, and even Sophie. The actions of a mean-spirited jock look awfully different when you see exactly why he's behaving the way he is.

I really liked this book. It's a quick read, and I found myself chuckling in delight quite a few times. And not to give anything away, but the ending is truly heartwarming. Plus, this is a completely clean book, with no harsh language or adult situations, so it'll be great for readers in grades five and up. I hope you like it, too!

FROM A KINNELON LIBRARY TEEN REVIEWER:

The book "Schooled" was hysterical. I enjoyed it so much! The characters in the book were so unique. I loved reading this story.

    schooled?

hey i loved the book schooled and i will definitely read it again because it is so addicting. Our school read it 8th grade first then 6th grade. if the 8th grade loved it 7th and 6th will to. i think the author of this book should keep writing books similar to this one because i think it will be one of the better books out there. that is my suggestion, and just for a heads up i will let u know that i will tell my librarian that she needs to buy the books u have published and she will so if u want people to read the books…. it’s up to you so now is the time

      Re: schooled?

Thanks for sharing your comments! It’s great that one book can be enjoyed by so many different age groups. I recommend “Schooled” all the time to both boys and girls in middle school. I’ve found the book appeals equally to both groups, because there’s so much comedy and heart in the story. And great idea on talking to your librarian! We always like to get feedback from our tween and teen patrons … after all, you guys are the ones reading the books!

I guess there *is* some truth to judging a book by its cover! That’s terrific that you found a cool book, loved it, and finished your book report, all at once! Thanks for posting your opinion. Good luck in your school year!

        Schooled

I read the book because a friend recommended it to me, and then another. I also had to read an easy book to report about. I read a LOT, but the books that I read are usually over 500 pages and not easy to report about. It was a great book, definitely worth the time it took to read, I love the ending!I love all of Gordan Korman’s books, though!

      I KNOW!!!!!!

This book is awesome. Cap is such a loser at first and is not in the least bit excepted in society but the ironic part of the book is that by the end of the book the situation has turned completely around!!!!!!!! Great book.

    i really enjoyed this book

i loved naomi and lena, they were my favorite characters! i also liked when cap did the tie-dying class, it inspired me to go out, and tie-dye one of my own shirts! i had to read this book for summer reading, and i loved it! i was surprised that my school would pick a book that so many kids (such as myself) would LOVE. even the kids that don’t usually read enjoyed it! and i really appreciate this review you wrote! it refreshed my memory for the test/quiz i’m taking soon. 🙂 thank you!!

It’s SO MUCH BETTER to read a book you enjoy for summer reading than just some dry, boring novel that you have to force your way through. I’m so happy for you! And I’m glad the review helped you prepare for the book quiz. I hope you did really well! Thanks for writing!

      Re: dumb book reader!!

I respect your differing opinion. We certainly don’t all have to agree!

I will say, however, that calling someone with an opposing point of view “dumb” is inappopriate. Dislike the idea, not the person! Secondly, while the main character of “Schooled” is initially viewed by his classmates as a “geek” and a “loser,” I think a lot of us love this book because we discover that Cap fits neither of those labels. Sometimes different can be cool, too. Maybe that idea can help people look at their classmates in a new way … and, hopefully, with a little more kindness.

      Thanks for the comment.

Of course you can use this review as a guide. The most important thing when writing your own book review is to make sure that the words and ideas are your own. If you stick to that guideline, you’ll be fine. Glad you liked the book. Thanks for commenting!

Yes, it is like Cap was transported via time machine to the present day. I never thought of it that way before, but you’re exactly right! And I’m so glad you mentioned the anti-bullying theme. That’s such an important issue and one that most us can relate to.
